Do I Really Exist?

I'm not sure what I really want, or need to say, so can I just ramble.....?

I worry about things. It's my nature so to do.

Today, I'm concerned by our government's decision to prosecute all teenagers who carry a knife.

Given the number of fatal stabbings that are reported in the press, you'd think this a good thing.

However, it takes no account of kids who are found in possession of a simple pocket knife, or a Swiss Army knife.

Get caught in possession of ANY kind of knife under the new legislation and you'll gain a criminal record!

Is this acceptable?

I don't think it is.

Sure, stabbings SEEM to be on the increase......But it's in direct proportion to the number of instances that are reported by the media.

They make it sound as though every other teenager is packing a knife.

That isn't the truth.

I know of NO teenager who carries a knife.

They're all too scared of being pulled by the police to even carry a simple penknife.

There are many really bad kids around here, but they go ON being bad, with seeming immuinty, while our law-abiding kids are abiding are stopped and searched on the flimsiest of pretexts.

Sorry, friends, but I needed to get this off my chest!

That's a crazy law. Here, I can't imagine such a thing. In the schools they have that rule though. My little boy carries a knife often. He is just a little boy with a cub scout knife or sometimes a pocket knife or multi-tool. He has several.

Yep, it IS crazy, but it's typical of our present government. They introduce blanket legislation with no thought as to how it affects the innocent. A couple of years ago, my younger son, who was then 13, went with a pal to explore an abandoned house, on a patch of waste-ground, with the idea of maybe making a den in it. A nearby resident saw them going into the house and, suspecting they were up to no good, called the police. Poor kids were terrified when they came out of the building, to be surrounded by no less than FOUR police officers! They were forced to their knees, handcuffed and taken to a police station in a town a good ten miles round trip from here ((our local station closes at 4p.m). There, they were fingerprinted, DNA-swabbed and locked in cells! The arresting officers and the duty sergeant were, fortunately, sensible men who weren't happy with the situation, but had to follow protocol. The boys weren't charged, but my son's Swiss Army knife was confiscated. It also means that my son's fingerprints and DNA are now in the police database. I can see this kind of thing happening more frequently when this new law is implemented - while the REAL hardcases, who carry knives with intent will carry on doing so.
